Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
by scout575 in"thou shalt not avenge nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, i am the lord.
" ( leviticus 19:18 ).
"but if ye will not hearken unto me...i will do this unto you: i will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart...i will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children.

Don't know what to belief anymore?
by GBSJG ini'm in my twenties and am raised as a jw by my parents.
i've been reading this board for over a year.
have read several books: crisis of consience, apocalypse delayed, who wrote the bible, the bible unearthed.

If you were raised jw and you're looking for truth, you'll need to wind back your thinking to babyhood.
If you are interested by the bible, forget the notion that it's a history book, like one from the library.
The stories are spiritually true - it is unlike the literal understanding of jwism - yet sharp.

Mom nearly ate me alive!
by Anony-Mouse inwe had a major talk about jws today.
i couldn't use the un or pedophiles, as this is 'outside' information, and she would never belive me.
then she would question my source, and i'd be killed by elder firing squad.

The 1914 thing - watchtower lterature shows that it was supposed to be the end (and 1874 for that matter) - they were wrong - flat out wrong - falsely prophesised - tell your mom that - and then they made up the story about Jesus coming invisibly.
Shoot, I could say that about tomorrow - "hey tommorrow Jesus is coming to judge you invisibly, and he'll be keeping a record of it" - and tomorrow there won't be anything that proves me wrong.
And the door to door work ? "do not go from house to house"

I'm scared and I need help
by Chameleon infor those of you that don't know my story, read my first post here: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/122526/1.ashx
so, i think next week is when i find out if i am approved to be an ms. if not, thank god, but if i am, i'm in deep crap.
elder dad is confident that i'll accept, but my plan is to try to get out of it by saying that i want to finish school and get an aa degree, at least, before accepting more responsibilities.

As LittleToe wrote - don't wait to be confronted - tell your dad beforehand that
- a degree is important for respected employment in society
- higher education is a way of promoting jws as being respected normal progressive independent decent folk
- you really need to do a proper job of doing a degree
- a degree is a waste of money and time if you don't do it right
- a degree is only a short term goal, but a seriously demanding one
- you want to be able to provide for them, or perhaps a family etc (are they wealthy ? If not include the "looking after them later" idea)
Get what YOU need to be no slave to anyone - not the jws, not your dad or the financial hammer of society.

is more or less in the “job description” of all Christians
Depend on your cultural view of 'christian'
For many, the cognitively dissonant white conservative fundamentalist isn't really it

Why are there so few atheists in the USA?
by moshe ini read a poll today that said atheists numbered 26% in israel.
russia and europe were about the same percentage, too.
the united states had the fewest at only 1% who identified as atheists.

The thread certainly is a barn door of a target for anti-USAism - paranoid freaks placating guilt does come to mind.
Didn't the first settlers take land from natives (the non-godfearing) and then build a fort to protect themselves from those 'evil people' ?
And fearing God is seen as a good thing - even having a term for it - "godfearing' = 'good' - and r eligions like jwism are just a normal standard deviation from the mean.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
That being said - I think that much amazing cultural thought comes out of the USA, but there is a large population of the cognitively dissonant.

If bad stuff happens to people on birthdays (such as they postulate), it would appear that Satan is the one who doesn't like birthdays, and the wts is simply observing Satan's will.

grandparents day in latest Awake!
by becca1 inin the new awake!
there is a short experience of a young sister who said: "we don't celebrate granparents day".
what is the basis for this conclusion?
-

It is certainly of important cult (inculcating) value for the wts to keep the 'flock' from meaningful socialising with their own family if they are not jw. These are typically the times when ills are forgotten, and dialogue and good will promoted - can't have that if you intend to keep a cult member.
Regarding wedding anniversaries, are the 'mixed' marriages celebrated in the ferver of the all jw ones ?

the walk of shame
by nonamegiven init all starts after you hear "these things we pray through jesus christ, amen".
i gather my books and the kid's books and put them away.
by that time people are walking over to us and talking to my wife and playing with my kids.
-
A Paduan
I also don't want my kids to pay the price for my situation.
Now that's the hard part
- for starters don't go - if you are to be "head of the house" you do need credibility in your children's eyes, and you aren't getting it by being shamed and bullied three times a week
Currently your children are becoming groomed for something your telling yourself is essentially harmless - yet this potentially harmless teaching is moulding them to be, lets just say, less than nice - or beyond attaining normal human capacity such as you yourself have described your wife.
It's a difficult and tender decision making process - if it were myself I would probably bring it to a head - t he older one will be already be starting to take in the "loving spirit" and my presumption is that it will only get progressively more difficult to instill 'thinking' as any sort of virtue. However it is easy for me to say, as I'm not clouded by anything they put forward - I simply have contempt for the wickedness and deal with it on that level - I was never a jw, but see attitude more like Garybuss', not believing a single word, and not pretending like they're somehow ok, just a bit "imperfect" - it's not ok - They're not ok.

Does it include doing something about their permissive response to all the hot air being made in the door to door work?
